The S.S. Malie cut through the calm surface of the Alolan waters like a Skarmory in mid-dive. The ship was the first of a new fleet currently being produced by the Aether Foundation using state of the art engine technology they had developed under Miss Wicke’s leadership. Wicke had made a point of focusing firmly of philanthropic pursuits in the seven years since President Lusamine was forced to step down. Sea spray soundlessly frothed against Moon’s window. Technology was amazing, but part of her missed the days when she was be able to feel the salt on her face.

Seven years. Seven years since Moon moved to the Alolan region with her mom. Seven years since she became a Pokemon trainer. Seven years since Professor Kukui formed the Alolan Pokemon League, and seven years since Moon became its first (and undefeated) Champion. Luna, her Umbreon, yawned and stretched in the seat next to her. Moon’s partner blinked at her for a moment in concern before returning to her nap. Moon stroked one of Luna’s ears affectionately. Seven years since she met this lazy bum.

Moon still remembered her mom’s reaction when she burst through the front door covered in scrapes and bruises, proudly hugging an equally battered Eevee. Her eleven year old self had taken Professor Kukui’s philosophy a bit too seriously. Growing up in Kanto, she had always wanted her own Pokemon partner, so she leapt at the first chance to have one after they moved, even if it meant fist-fighting an Eevee. Her mom was thrilled; anything for Moon to be happy here. She thought once Moon had a partner of her own that her daughter would be happy staying on the islands. After all, Moon had found a family there, both with the people she met and with her Pokemon. And the islands themselves were a paradise. And honestly, Moon was happy there. For a while.

For seven whole years.

But the time eventually came for her to leave. Professor Kukui once told her that when he travelled to the Kanto region the trainers there beat the pants off of him. Moon was ready to see if they really were that good. She had to take the Indigo League Challenge, to prove that Alolan trainers were every bit as good as the trainers from anywhere else. She was as firm in her purposes as an Alolan Geodude.

So why did she feel like she swallowed a rock size of her fist?

Maybe she was hungry. Moon reached for her backpack—Hau had given her a bag of malasadas as a parting gift. “One of each flavour,” he said. “So you can remember the whole region until you come back.” Moon felt her lips tighten, thought she wasn’t sure if it was from smiling or pushing back tears. She selected a circular pastry at random and shoved it into her mouth.

Ah, ah ah ah it was spicy, her first mistake. She inhaled sharply in surprise, her second mistake. Tapping Luna’s head, she bounced up from her seat and rounded the bend to find the nearest bathroom. Moon hadn’t made it more than a few steps down the hall when a young voice cut through the ship’s silent interior. A ten year old boy in a baseball hat was pointing at her from across an aisle of chairs.

“I knew I recognized you, Moon!”

A few heads turned to see what the commotion was.

“You’re the Alolan League Champion, and I challenge you to a battle!” The kid’s voice oozed pride from each syllable.

Son of a Bellsprout. Moon practically bounced in place as she tried not to hyperventilate. That was an official challenge made in front of witnesses. According to Professor Kukui’s rules, if she turned it down she would forfeit her title. Stupid rule. Fine.

Moon nodded her agreement and gestured with her hand for the kid to choose his Pokemon. After several moments too long of him fumbling with his little ten year old fingers, a bolt of white light shot out from his Pokeball.

“Gary, I choose you!” As he spoke a Slowpoke materialized on the tiled floor. Moon suddenly felt very bad about this whole thing. The poor Pokemon looked like this kid must have caught it on his way to the S.S. Malie; he hadn’t even taken it to a Pokemon Center. Despite this kid’s inexperience, that moment of hesitation was all he needed. “Gary, use water gun!” The Slowpoke yawned once, then fired a jet of water in the direction of Luna. With practiced ease the Umbreon avoided the attack—but Moon didn’t. The high-pressure stream engulfed her. The heat in her throat was instantly quenched, but a panic in her chest ignited in its place. There was no time to mess around now.

“Luna, use Feint Attack!” Luna’s ears snapped to attention and she disappeared in a blur of movement. She reappeared across the aisle to the Slowpoke’s left and lingered there for half a beat, just long enough to let the pink Pokemon brace for impact. Then there was another blur and Luna seemingly teleported again, now to Slowpoke’s right to deliver a brutal full-body tackle. The impact sent Slowpoke flying across the lobby where it landed in a dazed heap.

The kid blinked twice in disbelief and then opened his mouth to say something, maybe to recall his poor Slowpoke or to announce a new Pokemon or just to cry. It didn’t really matter, because Moon and Luna were already gone.

The Alolan League Champion sprinted straight for the nearest bathroom, clutching her backpack in front of her and with Luna following close on her heels. She slammed the door and slid the lock into place. Luna took up a watchdog stance outside to ensure no one tried to get in.

Moon’s hands were shaking. She had not been prepared to get wet. That was the point of taking this boat. With trembling hands she undid the drawstring on her green shorts and let them fall to her ankles, confirming her worst fears. Her diaper was completely soaked.
Hey hey!
